What the 1MB Target Means
On this page, 1MB means 1,024KB, which is 1,048,576 bytes. That value is a ceiling rather than an exact output size. CompressTo searches for an image at or below the limit, so a successful result might be 1,012KB, 940KB, or smaller. Image encoders offer particular combinations of quality and file size; adding padding just to reach exactly 1MB would not improve the picture.
If your original is already under 1MB, the tool will say so instead of needlessly recompressing it. You can then choose a lower target. When a form uses “MB” differently or publishes a limit in bytes, follow the destination’s stated value.
Where an Image Under 1MB Is Commonly Used
A 1MB maximum is roomy enough for many useful web images while still being much lighter than an unedited phone or camera photo. Typical destinations include property and vehicle listings, product catalogues, portfolio samples, profile and cover photos, blog illustrations, support tickets, and application portals that cap individual attachments. - Start with a clean source: repeated saving compounds compression artifacts, so use the original image when possible.
- Match the destination: do not preserve oversized dimensions when the image will only appear in a small listing or profile.
- Compare both outputs: when the receiving service accepts JPEG and WebP, try each and inspect faces, text, gradients, and sharp edges.
- Recompress from the original: use the target controls on the result screen to compare another limit without selecting the file again.

Compression happens locally in your browser. Your image file, visual contents, and filename are not uploaded to a CompressTo server. This also means performance depends on your device and browser; a large, high-resolution source can take longer on an older phone. Keep the page open until processing finishes, then inspect the downloaded file using the app or portal where you plan to use it.
