What “500KB or Less” Means
The 500KB setting is a maximum file size, not an instruction to pad every image to exactly 500KB. CompressTo treats one kilobyte as 1,024 bytes and searches for a result that stays at or below the selected limit. The finished file might be 497KB, 460KB, or considerably smaller when the image can be encoded efficiently.
This variation is normal. Image encoders cannot produce every possible byte count, and an original that is already below 500KB does not need this target. In that case, the tool tells you the file is already under the limit so you can choose a smaller target if you want to recompress it.
When a 500KB Target Is Useful
A 500KB ceiling is useful when a full-size phone photo or camera image is too large, but a very small target would remove more detail than the destination requires. It can suit portfolio samples, product photos, property listings, blog images, profile pictures, and form uploads that allow files up to 500KB. It also makes email and messaging attachments lighter without forcing every image into a thumbnail-sized budget.
Always read the destination’s complete requirements. A website may also specify minimum or maximum pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, colour profile, or accepted format. A file below 500KB can still be rejected when it breaks another rule, and CompressTo cannot guarantee acceptance by a third party.
Image Quality and Pixel Dimensions
File size and pixel dimensions describe different things. File size is the storage used by the encoded image; dimensions are its width and height. A detailed 4000 × 3000 photograph usually needs more data than a simple 1200 × 900 graphic, even when both are saved in the same format. To reach 500KB, the compressor may adjust encoding quality and, when necessary, reduce dimensions.
A 500KB budget often leaves useful room for web-sized photographs, but the result still depends on the source. Hair, foliage, fine patterns, text, and digital noise are harder to compress cleanly. Use the before-and-after preview and check the reported dimensions rather than assuming the byte count alone guarantees a particular level of quality.
When to Enable Preserve Dimensions
Enable Preserve Dimensions when the destination requires the original width and height or when resizing would disrupt an established layout. With this setting on, the compressor must rely more heavily on encoding quality to stay below 500KB, so a large or complex image may show more visible change.
Leave it off when the final pixel dimensions are flexible. Allowing the tool to resize gives it another way to meet the limit and can produce a cleaner-looking result than keeping a very large canvas at a lower encoding quality. Check any portal’s dimension rules before deciding.
JPEG Versus WebP at 500KB
JPEG is a practical choice when broad compatibility matters, including older upload systems and workflows that explicitly request a JPG file. WebP can often preserve more visual detail within the same 500KB allowance, especially for modern websites and apps that accept it. The better choice depends on the image and the destination, so compare both when either format is permitted.
Uploaded PNG images can be processed here, but the downloadable result is JPEG or WebP. If the original relies on transparency, inspect the result carefully because JPEG does not support transparent pixels and the destination may have its own format requirements.
Check the Downloaded Result Before Uploading It
After compression, confirm that the downloaded file is no larger than 500KB, opens correctly, and still shows the details you need. Check faces, small text, edges, and any important crop at the size people will actually view. Then compare its pixel dimensions and format with the receiving website’s rules. This final check is especially important for application forms, marketplaces, and publishing systems that may validate more than file size.
